Research Summary:
Confluence & Effluence: Conflict and Collaboration in Transboundary Water Governance
Access to and management of water resources are among the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, particularly in transboundary contexts where competing interests, diverse governance structures, and environmental pressures converge. As water flows in, out, and through different jurisdictions, it is integrated into the wider socio-political contexts of the people along its shores. Addressing the complexity of entangled jurisdictions and socio-political contexts requires stakeholders to recognize their interdependencies, share resources, and work together. Collaborative governance systems have emerged to harness this collective action, by bringing diverse stakeholders together inclusively, building trust and legitimacy, and performed concerted actions that are more impactful than individual efforts. However, when interests diverge between stakeholders, which they often do; conflicts will arise.
My research focuses on unravelling the interactions between conflict and collaborative governance practices, and shedding light on support tools and control mechanisms to manage this conflict constructively.
I am part of the research project NSERC ResNet: A network for monitoring, modeling, and managing Canadian ecosystem services for sustainability and resilience .
